Devendra Fadnavis Resigns As Maharashtra Chief Minister

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis, who was avowed in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on Saturday, and Nationalist Congress Party leader Ajit Pawar, who was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister, resigned from their posts a few hours back. This happened hours after the Supreme Court directed Fadnavis to prove the majority during the floor test scheduled to be held on Wednesday.

The Governor, BS Koshiyari, should appoint a new Chief Minister. He is going to call the alliance parties - the Nationalist Congress Party, Shiv Sena and the Congress to form the government in Maharashtra.

Going into further details, the BJP and Shiv Sena party had fought the Maharashtra Assembly election as an alliance. But after the results were announced, they parted ways over sharing the chief ministerial post. As the parties reached a dilemma, Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress came together to post the claim.

However, as a surprise move on Saturday, Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari swore in Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar as the CM and the deputy CM, respectively.

Addressing the media, Fadnavis said, “Ajit Pawar gave me his resignation. BJP had decided from the first day we will not indulge in horse-trading. We only decided to form the government because NCP was with us. Since he has resigned, I will also resign."

"I'll go to Raj Bhavan and tender my resignation. Whoever will form the government, I wish them all the best. But this will be a very unstable government as there are huge differences of opinions amongst them” said Fadnavis.

As per the reports, after the SC verdict, NCP Chief Sharad Pawar, who is Ajit Pawar’s uncle, on Tuesday called Ajit up and asked him to come back to the NCP.
