Faridabad Surajkund Mela Tragedy: Tsunami Swing Collapse Kills Haryana Police Inspector, Injures 13
A tragic accident marred the festivities at the Surajkund International Crafts Mela in Faridabad on Saturday, February 7, after a popular “tsunami” swing collapsed, resulting in the death of a Haryana Police inspector and injuries to at least 13 others. The incident triggered panic among visitors and raised serious questions about safety measures at large public events.
According to initial reports, the swing malfunctioned during operation, causing several riders and nearby visitors to be thrown off balance. Inspector Jagdish Prasad, who was deployed at the mela for security duty, rushed to rescue the injured when the structure collapsed. He sustained critical injuries during the rescue effort and later succumbed while being taken for medical treatment.
Officials confirmed that 13 people were injured, including two police personnel. All injured individuals were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Deputy Commissioner of Police Maqsood Ahmed said the situation was swiftly brought under control and the affected area was barricaded to prevent further mishaps.
“An accident occurred after a swing collapsed at the mela. Some people were injured and have been shifted to the hospital. A detailed investigation will be conducted, and strict action will be taken against those responsible,” the DCP said, adding that the exact cause of the collapse is being examined.
Senior district officials, including the Deputy Commissioner, Managing Director of Tourism, and senior police officers, reached the site soon after the incident. Notably, earlier in the day, a gate near the food court reportedly collapsed due to strong winds, further highlighting safety concerns.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini expressed grief over the incident and offered condolences to the bereaved family. He assured that the state government would ensure proper treatment for the injured and extend all necessary assistance to the affected families.
