Former RBI Governor Subbarao Praises Telangana’s Growth, Leaving CM Embarrassed
Former RBI Governor Duvvuri Subbarao’s remarks at the Global Summit created a stir on Tuesday when he openly praised Telangana’s strong growth under the previous BRS government. Speaking before Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, Subbarao highlighted how Telangana had transformed over the last decade from a region marked by poverty and backwardness into one of India’s fastest-growing states.
At the event hosted by the Congress-led government, Subbarao stated that Telangana had likely recorded the highest growth rate in the country over the past ten years. He described Hyderabad as a “charming and beautiful city,” calling it the “jewel of India” and a true representation of diversity, modernity, and culture. He added that Hyderabad remains one of the safest and most inclusive cities in the nation—an assessment that reportedly left the Chief Minister visibly uncomfortable.
The former RBI Governor recounted how Telangana’s rapid development under BRS had earned admiration from economists, industrialists, and global observers. He further said that the state's achievements are so significant that people worldwide may soon refer to following the “Telangana Model” for governance and development. Subbarao’s appreciation stands in contrast to the Congress government’s efforts to reshape the narrative surrounding Telangana’s recent history.
His remarks, widely discussed across political circles, reinforce the view that Telangana experienced exceptional progress in infrastructure, investment, public services, and economic growth during the last decade. The unexpected praise from a respected economist during a Congress-hosted summit highlighted political sensitivities around development claims, creating an awkward moment for the current administration.
