Gandhi Jayanti: PM Modi Leads Nation in Remembering Mahatma Gandhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat in New Delhi on October 2, marking the 156th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation. Union Minister Manohar Lal accompanied the Prime Minister, as leaders across India remembered Gandhi’s enduring ideals of truth, non-violence, and service.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi shared a message on X, highlighting Gandhi’s simplicity and moral courage as powerful tools of transformation. He pledged that India would continue following the Mahatma’s path in its journey towards becoming a “Viksit Bharat” (developed nation). “Gandhi Jayanti is about paying homage to Bapu, whose ideals transformed human history. Service and compassion are the pillars that empower people,” Modi wrote.
Gandhi Jayanti is also observed worldwide as the International Day of Non-Violence, following a 2007 UN resolution supported by more than 140 countries. At the United Nations, tributes often underline Gandhi’s relevance to modern-day conflicts, emphasizing that truth and non-violence remain more powerful than weapons.
In India, the day is marked by tributes at Gandhi memorials, cultural programs, and educational campaigns. Across schools and institutions, events highlight Gandhi’s teachings of Satyagraha and simplicity.
Mahatma Gandhi, born on October 2, 1869, led India’s freedom movement through peaceful resistance. His iconic campaigns, including the 1930 Salt March against oppressive British laws and the Quit India Movement of 1942, remain milestones in history. Today, Gandhi’s message of peace continues to resonate globally.
As India honors his memory, Gandhi Jayanti serves not just as a reminder of the past but as a guidepost for building a just, peaceful, and progressive society.
