Google and HP launch Chromebook production in India
Google and HP have begun manufacturing Chromebooks in India, the PC manufacturer announced on Monday.
The Chromebook devices are manufactured at the Flex Facility close to Chennai, where HP has produced a variety of laptops and desktops since August of 2020.
"We're partnering with HP to manufacture Chromebooks in India – These are the first Chromebooks to be made in India and will make it easier for Indian students to have access to affordable and secure computing," Google CEO Sundar Pichai wrote in a post on X on Monday.
A spokesperson for HP verified that Chromebook production has begun in India.
Each new Chromebook is available online for a starting price of Rs 15,990.
Under the government's Rs 17,000 crore production-linked incentive programme for IT infrastructure, HP is one of the applicants.
Chromebooks are more affordable than notebooks with a proprietary operating system.
A joint statement of Google and HP said Chromebooks are dominant devices in K-12 education, assisting over 50 million pupils and instructors across the globe.
Chromebook production in India expands HP's PC offerings created in India.
Since 2020, HP has been expanding its manufacturing operations in India, and in December 2021, the company began producing a variety of laptops in India, including HP EliteBooks, HP ProBooks, and HP G8 series notebooks.
It has also added a variety of desktop mini towers (MT), mini desktops (DM), small form factor (SFF) desktops, and all-in-one PCs to its portfolio of locally produced commercial desktops.
