Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a pro-Khalistan leader, was killed.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar was a pro-Khalistan leader in Canada. The Indian government said he was a "wanted terrorist," and two unnamed shooters shot and killed him in the parking lot of Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in the Punjabi-dominated city of Surrey in the province of British Columbia.
He ran Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara as its leader. Nijjar lived in a town in the city of Jalandhar. He was involved with the banned nationalist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ). Nijjar was accused of killing Ripudaman Singh Malik in Surrey last year. Ripudaman Singh Malik was found not guilty in the 1985 Air India bombing case. He was a key part of setting up the Khalistan vote in Brampton city.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed a charge sheet against Nijjar and three other people last year for plotting to kill Hindu priest Kamaldeep Sharma in Jalandhar on January 31, 2021. Nijjar was one of the four people charged.
Kamaljeet Sharma, Ram Singh, and Arshdeep Singh alias Prabh are the other three people charged in the case. Nijjar and his friend Arshdeep Singh alias Prabh told them to attack the priest.
The NIA says that the suspects Arshdeep and Nijjar, who both live in Canada, planned to kill a Hindu priest in Punjab to upset the peace and unity between different religious groups there.
