Hyd to US Scam: $20,000 Daily Target
Three fraudulent call centers were discovered by Cyberabad police in Madhapur, shutting down a scam that preyed on US people. The fraudsters deceived foreigners into disclosing personal information and paying fines by disguising themselves as US Customs agents and Amazon customer care employees.
The victims were forced into buying Amazon or Apple gift cards, which the scammers then exchanged for bitcoin and paid out on the victims. Every day, around 15 US residents were defrauded of $20,000 in fraud.
$20K, or around Rs. 1.6 crores, is a significant sum, and a fraud of this magnitude was taking place in Madhapur, in the center of Hyderabad.
Due to the constant interchange of technology, labor, and other items, the US has grown to seem like an extension of home for Indians.
There are thousands of call centers in Hyderabad alone that communicate everyday with millions of Americans. As a result, there are more of these scam businesses popping up every day. In a country with little prospects, the attraction of quick money might tempt some people to participate in dishonest behavior, which feeds the issue.
By preying on Americans' trust and technical prowess, these scams not only result in financial losses and erode their faith in Indians, but also damage India's image.
