India Writes History: Chandrayaan-2 Launch Successful
Chandrayaan-2 was launched today at 2.43 PM from Sriharikota Space Centre to the Moon by a Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk III). It is India’s second lunar exploration mission after Chandrayaan-1.
Announcing Chandrayaan 2’s successful lift-off, ISRO Chairman K Sivan said, “I am extremely happy to announce that the GSLV MkIII-M1 rocket has successfully injected Chandrayaan 2 spacecraft into Earth’s orbit. It is the beginning of a historic journey for India towards Moon and to land at a place near the South Pole, to carry out scientific experiments”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted and congratulated all Indians and scientists for the successful launch.
The total mass of the spacecraft is 3.8 tonne and the total cost of the project is 978 crores. The original schedule of the launch was 15 July 2019 at 2:51 IST, but due to some technical glitch it was canceled 56 minutes before the launch. Ahead of the launch, many people offered prayers for mission’s success as today is the first Monday of Shravan and is considered auspicious.
With the spacecraft successfully placed in Earth’s orbit, the Indian Flag is flying high. The soft landing will be done near the lunar south pole region forty-eight days later.
Special moments that will be etched in the annals of our glorious history!
