Indian Army Defend Ice-Hockey Gold at Khelo India Winter Games
The Indian Army successfully defended their men’s ice-hockey gold medal at the Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG) in Ladakh, edging out a determined Chandigarh team 3-2 in a thrilling final at the NDS Stadium on Republic Day.
The decisive goal came just three minutes before the final whistle, sealing a dramatic victory for the Army team and drawing loud cheers from spectators. The closely contested match showcased the growing competitiveness of ice hockey in India’s winter sports circuit.
In the overall team standings for the Ladakh phase of KIWG 2026, Haryana emerged as champions, driven by strong performances from their figure skating and ice skating athletes, who collectively won four gold medals. Ladakh, Maharashtra, and Telangana secured two gold medals each, with silver medal counts determining their final rankings.
Goal scorer Birshahaanjit credited his background in inline hockey for his performance, stating that years of experience had strengthened his skating and puck-control skills. He expressed confidence that his team would compete for gold next year.
Notably, Ishaan Darvekar (Maharashtra), Nayana Sri Talluri (Telangana), and Sachin Singh (Haryana) each finished the games with two gold medals, underlining the depth of talent on display.
