Lok Sabha Election 2024 Phase 5: Voting Update and Turnout
Voting is underway in 49 constituencies across six states and two Union Territories in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024. By 5 PM, the overall voter turnout was 56.68%, with Ladakh recording a high turnout of 67.15%.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi encouraged women and young voters to participate, while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi mentioned a "storm of change" sweeping the country.
The Election Commission of India reported that by 1 PM, the voter turnout was 36.73% across the 49 seats. Ladakh had the highest turnout at 52.02%, followed by West Bengal at 48.4%, Jharkhand at 41.8%, and Uttar Pradesh at 39.5%. Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir recorded 34.79%, and Maharashtra had 27.78%.
Voting is taking place in Uttar Pradesh (14 seats), Maharashtra (13), West Bengal (7), Bihar (5), Odisha (5), Jharkhand (3), and one seat each in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. The fifth phase features several high-profile candidates, including Rahul Gandhi, Smriti Irani, Rajnath Singh, and Omar Abdullah.
In addition to the Lok Sabha seats, 35 assembly constituencies in Odisha are also voting today. Over 8.95 crore voters are eligible, with more than 94,000 polling stations and around 9.47 lakh polling officials deployed.
In the 2019 elections, the BJP and its allies won 39 of these 49 seats. The Congress won only one seat, Raebareli, while the INDIA bloc parties won eight seats. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) won the remaining two seats.
With this phase, voting for more than three-fourths of the 543 Lok Sabha seats will be complete. The final two phases of voting will occur on May 25 and June 1, with all votes counted on June 4.
