Lokesh Hails US Tariff Reduction as Major Win for India, Sees Big Gains for Andhra Pradesh
Andhra Pradesh IT and Industries Minister Nara Lokesh has welcomed the United States’ decision to reduce tariffs on Indian goods from 25 percent to 18 percent, describing it as a major achievement for India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said the move would significantly enhance India’s export competitiveness and provide fresh momentum to the manufacturing sector.
In a post on social media, Lokesh noted that the tariff reduction would have a direct and positive impact on Andhra Pradesh’s economy. He highlighted that several key sectors in the state—including marine seafood exports, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), agricultural exports and emerging manufacturing hubs—stand to benefit from improved access to the US market.
According to the minister, the decision comes at a crucial time for exporters and entrepreneurs who are seeking to expand their global footprint. Lower tariffs, he said, would improve price competitiveness, encourage higher export volumes and attract greater investment into export-oriented industries within the state.
Lokesh also said the development would further strengthen the strategic and economic partnership between India and the United States, reinforcing mutual trust and cooperation. He credited the successful outcome to effective diplomacy and coordinated negotiations by the leadership of both countries.
The minister expressed appreciation for the efforts of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, led by Union Minister Piyush Goyal, as well as the negotiating teams involved in finalising the agreement. Describing the tariff cut as a breakthrough, Lokesh said it reflects India’s growing confidence and influence in global trade negotiations.
Industry stakeholders in Andhra Pradesh have welcomed the announcement, viewing it as an opportunity to scale up production, generate employment and position the state as a stronger player in international trade.
