Madras High Court Gives Relief to Boney Kapoor Family in Sridevi Property Case
The Madras High Court has provided major relief to film producer Boney Kapoor and daughters Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor by dismissing a legal dispute related to a property once owned by late actress Sridevi. The court rejected claims over a 2.70-acre land parcel in Sholinganallur, Chennai, stating that the case lacked legal merit and was filed decades after the original property transaction.
The dispute arose when plaintiffs claiming to be legal heirs of late MC Chandrasekaran challenged the validity of the 1988 sale deeds through which the property was purchased by Sridevi, her mother, and sister. The plaintiffs alleged that the original sellers did not possess lawful ownership of the land and questioned the legitimacy of the transaction.
However, the Kapoor family challenged the suit under provisions of the Code of Civil Procedure, arguing that Chandrasekaran himself had never objected to the sale during his lifetime. Their counsel also stated that the plaintiffs were not recognised as his Class I legal heirs.
The High Court observed that the case was filed nearly 40 years after the sale and therefore exceeded the permissible legal limitation period. It also noted inconsistencies in the plaintiffs’ claims regarding legal heirship and pointed out that the certificate they relied upon had already been cancelled.
The court further ruled that after Sridevi’s death in 2018, the property legally passed to her husband Boney Kapoor and daughters Janhvi and Khushi Kapoor. Calling the lawsuit an abuse of legal process, the court dismissed the civil suit and overturned an earlier order issued by a Chengalpattu court.
The judgment brings an end to a long legal challenge and secures the Kapoor family’s ownership rights over the Chennai property.
