Massive Turnout: India's General Election Round 1 Sees 65.4% Participation
India witnessed a remarkable turnout of 65.4% in the first phase of the General Election, spanning 102 seats across 21 states and Union Territories. Despite this, concerns arose due to sporadic incidents of violence reported in Manipur and Bengal.
The Election Commission reassured the public of its commitment to ensuring a smooth, transparent, and inclusive electoral process for the upcoming phases of the General Elections 2024.
Notable voter turnouts were observed in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, recording 68% and 68.3%, respectively. However, states like Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan saw a slight decrease in voting percentages compared to the 2019 elections.
With Bengal recording a significant turnout of 77.6%, the BJP aims to narrow the gap with Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress, which won 18 seats in 2019.
In the northeastern states, including Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura, impressive voter participation was observed, despite sporadic incidents of violence reported in Bengal and Manipur.
The BJP remains optimistic about securing a third consecutive term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, despite winning only half the seats in the last general election. Meanwhile, the Congress projects improved performance in northern states and anticipates victories in southern states like Telangana and Karnataka.
The counting of votes is scheduled for June 4, marking the culmination of the electoral process.
