Mayadari Maisamma: A Folk Song that Transcends Time and Genre

The Telangana folk song 'Mayadari Maisamma', released in 1990, is still a hit today. The song is a must-play not only for festivities but also for celebratory occasions.
The song was written and composed by noted folk singer-songwriter and music composer A. Clement. Clement has a strong command of the Telangana dialect, and his other songs, such as Katta Meeda and Laskar Jatara Lo Bonala Panduga, have also become popular.
"At that time, few Janapada Geetalu (folk songs) like Jilelamma and Kodi Bai Lachamma were popular. And this song "Mayadari Maisamma" was made up in the recording studio because the producer did not like the original lyrics," says Clement. He adds that the song became an instant hit.
While Mayadari Maisamma is often played in temples during the Bonalu festival, Clement clarifies that it is written only about a blooming love between Bava and Mardalu.
"Long back when I started my career, and before Telangana's formation, folk songs and folk singers were always looked down upon. Now, these songs are a part of mainstream cinema and are admired worldwide," he concludes.
The popularity of Mayadari Maisamma is a testament to the enduring appeal of Telangana folk music. The song's catchy melody and relatable lyrics have made it a favorite among people of all ages.
