Modi Secures Third Term; NDA and INDIA Bloc Strategize Post-Election Moves
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is set to convene on Wednesday, following the announcement of the 2024 Lok Sabha poll results. On Tuesday evening, Prime Minister Modi confirmed that the NDA would form the next government.
Both the BJP-led NDA and the Opposition INDIA bloc will hold strategy meetings on Wednesday to plan their future political actions.
Election Results and Meetings
The Election Commission completed the declaration of results for all 543 Lok Sabha constituencies early Wednesday, with the BJP securing 240 seats and the Congress winning 99.
The Union Cabinet meeting is scheduled for 11:30 am in Delhi. Later, NDA leaders, including Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and former Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu, will gather at Prime Minister Modi's residence at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg at 3:30 pm. The INDIA bloc will meet in the national capital at around 6 pm.
Lok Sabha Election 2024 Results
The vote counting took place on Tuesday. The BJP won 240 seats, a significant drop from its 2019 tally of 303. The Congress made substantial gains, winning 99 seats. The INDIA bloc surpassed the 230 mark, presenting a strong challenge and defying predictions.
Modi's Third Term
Despite falling 32 seats short of the 272 majority mark, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has secured a third term. The BJP will need the support of coalition partners like JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar and TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu. This marks the first time since 2014 that the BJP has not secured a majority on its own.
Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude to the voters and asserted that the BJP-led NDA will form its third consecutive government. He highlighted the victory as a testament to the resolve for a developed India, inclusive growth, and strong faith in the Indian Constitution.
"On this sacred day, it is confirmed that NDA is forming the government for the third time. We are grateful to the people; they reposed full faith in the BJP and NDA. This is the victory of the world's largest democracy, the strong faith in India's Constitution, and the resolve for a developed Bharat. It is the victory of 'Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas'," Modi said at the BJP headquarters on Tuesday.
Following the results, Congress and other opposition leaders announced that the INDIA bloc would meet on Wednesday to decide on future strategies.
