Nagarkurnool Hostel Food Poisoning: Parents Allege Students Discharged Hastily Before VIP Visit

Tensions flared at Nagarkurnool’s Government General Hospital on Sunday after several students who fell ill from food poisoning were reportedly discharged abruptly before the visit of former Minister T Harish Rao. Parents alleged the discharge was carried out hastily to avoid embarrassment during Rao's visit.
The incident began Saturday night at Jyothibha Phule Girls Residential School in Uyyalawada, where about 79 students reportedly fell sick after consuming stale curd served during dinner. Symptoms included vomiting and severe stomach pain. While 12 students were discharged on Sunday, many remained hospitalized. By morning, an additional 50 students reportedly experienced similar symptoms and were admitted.
Parents expressed anger and frustration at the hospital staff, claiming their children were released prematurely. Some accused authorities of prioritizing optics over healthcare. Hospital staff defended the discharges, asserting the students were stable and no longer in danger.
The parents also criticized the school administration for its delayed response, saying timely medical attention could have prevented further illnesses. Crowds gathered at the hospital as the situation escalated, with media presence highlighting the matter.
The episode has triggered concern over food safety and administrative accountability at government-run hostels. Local officials are expected to launch an investigation into the cause of the contamination and the timing of discharges.
