Nara Lokesh Flags Off Everest Mission for Special Needs Students
In a significant step towards inclusive education, Andhra Pradesh Minister Nara Lokesh has launched a unique Everest Base Camp expedition for students with special needs. The initiative, flagged off at his residence in Undavalli, aims to empower students through real-world experiences beyond traditional classroom learning.
A total of 21 students from government schools and junior colleges will participate in the 16-day expedition from April 15 to April 30. The group includes students with hearing, visual, intellectual, and locomotor disabilities, with eight girls among the participants.
The students will travel to Nepal and attempt to reach the Everest Base Camp at an altitude of 5,364 meters. Organized under the Samagra Shiksha initiative, this marks the first time in India that a government-supported team of specially-abled students is undertaking such a challenge.
Lokesh described the expedition as a transformative journey that would help build confidence, resilience, and a broader outlook on life. He emphasized the importance of providing equal opportunities and breaking societal barriers associated with disability.
The participants have undergone extensive training at the Gandikota Adventure Sports Academy and have previously taken part in treks in Ladakh. They expressed excitement and gratitude, stating that the experience has already boosted their confidence.
This initiative sets a strong example of inclusive development, demonstrating that with the right support and determination, students can overcome limitations and achieve extraordinary goals.
