On July 21, Lionel Messi will make his Inter Miami debut.
Jorge Mas, co-owner of Inter Miami of the United Soccer League, stated that Lionel Messi would debut for the team on July 21 in a Leagues Cup match against Cruz Azul of Mexico.
According to Xinhua, Messi's departure from PSG was publicized about two weeks before his move to the Florida club, co-owned by former England captain David Beckham.
The 35-year-old will debut at the redeveloped DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, expanding its seating capacity and strengthening its security measures.
Reports have claimed that Messi has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with an additional year's extension option. The annual salary is between $50 and $60 million.
"Absolutely no changes in the roster rules," Mas said to the Miami Herald. Nothing is being reclassified or altered, so Lionel Messi may join Inter Miami's roster.
Mas said the presence of the World Cup champion would revolutionize football in America.
The media has reported that Inter Miami would hire Gerardo Martino, Messi's former coach at Barcelona and the Argentina national squad.
Midfielder Sergio Busquets, a former colleague of Messi's at Barcelona who is currently a free agent after leaving the Catalan club earlier this month, is reportedly negotiating with the club.
Mas also shared that the team plans to break ground on a new stadium shortly; they call it Miami Freedom Park, and they expect to open it in 2025.
