'One Nation - One Election': Does It Work?
Prahlad Joshi, the minister for parliamentary affairs, revealed the startling decision by the Modi administration to call a special session of Parliament from September 18 to 22 on Thursday. This occurs immediately after the end of Parliament's Monsoon Session on August 12.
The unexpected scheduling of special sessions before to the regularly planned winter sessions, which were initially set for December, has sparked political conjecture and debate.
Joshi expressed optimism for the success of these workshops, which are taking place in conjunction with the Amrit Call. These extraordinary sessions are expected to start in the old Parliament building and end in the new one.
Although the government has not released the precise agenda for these sessions, reputable sources indicate that the administration may seek to present the Jamili Election Bill during these special meetings under the name "One Nation-One Election."
Political commentators are arguing whether the government should consider slightly delaying the Lok Sabha polls and holding partial simultaneous elections in as many states as possible if nationwide simultaneous elections are not feasible.
Party insiders, however, believe that the Modi administration may reveal unexpected and unusual actions at these meetings, hoping to divert the public's focus and foster a supportive environment for the BJP in the forthcoming general elections.
The significant financial resources needed for personnel, security measures, electronic voting machines (EVMs), and voter-verified paper audit trails (VVPATs) provide one of the main problems for simultaneous elections. However, the political world thinks that such modifications are unlikely to be approved since a two-thirds majority is required for constitutional revisions.
Can the Modi administration dissolve the Karnataka Assembly, which was established in May of this year, if it is prepared for general elections? The plan for simultaneous elections is anticipated to be rejected by the majority of the opposition parties. The Congress party asserts that this action may be an effort to divert attention from issues like the Adani group scam.
