PM Modi Opens 'Rising North East' Summit, Calls Diversity the Region’s Strength

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the ‘Rising North East Investors Summit’ on May 23, 2025, emphasizing the government’s commitment to accelerating the region’s growth and development. Addressing a packed gathering that included chief ministers, union ministers, top industrialists, diplomats, and policymakers, Modi highlighted the region’s transition from a troubled frontier to a growth frontrunner.
“The Northeast is no longer defined by violence; it is leading India’s progress,” he said. Stressing peace and opportunity, he cited that over 10,000 youth in the region have renounced violence in the last decade. Under the acronym “EAST” — Empower, Act, Strengthen, Transform — Modi reaffirmed his administration’s focus on inclusive development.
Industry giants like Mukesh Ambani, Gautam Adani, and Anil Agarwal were present at the event, underscoring corporate interest in the Northeast. The summit, organized by the central and state governments, is designed to attract both domestic and international investments by showcasing the region’s potential.
Key focus areas for investment include tourism, agro-processing, textiles, healthcare, education, information technology, infrastructure, and energy. Pre-summit activities, including roadshows and bilateral meetings, were organized to build momentum for the event.
The summit features ministerial panels, business-to-government sessions, startup showcases, and exhibitions to present policy initiatives and opportunities. With its rich biodiversity, cultural heritage, and strategic location, the Northeast is increasingly seen as a vital contributor to India’s economy and global standing.
By combining peace-building with policy reforms and infrastructure development, the Modi government aims to position the region not just as India’s gateway to Southeast Asia, but as a core engine of national growth. The Summit sends a strong signal that India views the Northeast as central to its future, not peripheral.
