PM Modi Responds to Trump’s Tariff Hike: ‘India Will Never Compromise on Farmers’ Interests’

Amid rising trade tensions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has responded strongly to U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to impose 50% tariffs on India over its purchase of Russian oil. Addressing the MS Swaminathan Centenary Conference, Modi said, “India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers.”
Though he didn’t directly name Trump or the U.S., Modi admitted the consequences of standing firm. “I know we will have to pay a heavy price, and I am ready for it,” he declared.
The Ministry of External Affairs criticized the U.S. move as “extremely unfortunate,” adding that India’s imports are based on market factors and national energy security. “These actions are unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable,” the statement said, adding that India would take all necessary steps to protect its national interest.
The tariffs come after India’s continued oil imports from Russia, which the U.S. claims violate international efforts to isolate Moscow. Modi’s remarks underline India's strong stand to protect domestic priorities despite international pressure.
India’s message is clear: it will prioritize its internal welfare, especially farmers’ livelihoods, even at the cost of strained foreign relations.
