Pawan Kalyan Highlights Water Access Challenges at Jaljeevan Mission Workshop
Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan underscored the critical importance of water access during the Jaljeevan Mission workshop, a flagship initiative by the central government aimed at ensuring every household receives at least 20 liters of water daily. Addressing senior engineers and officials from 26 districts, Kalyan remarked, “The value of water is known only when water is not available,” emphasizing the growing need for efficient water management.
Commitment to Water Security
Kalyan highlighted the Jaljeevan Mission as a key endeavor in realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of nationwide water security. He announced plans to submit a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to the Union Minister of Jal Shakti by January-end, aimed at accelerating the project’s implementation in Andhra Pradesh.
The Deputy Chief Minister criticized mismanagement by previous governments, citing the misuse of ₹4,000 crores in borewell projects and policy violations in diverting water from central reservoirs. "Despite significant expenditure, the outcomes have been disappointing," Kalyan observed, stressing the need for a systematic and innovative approach to water resource management.
Addressing Infrastructure and Technological Gaps
Kalyan called for critical upgrades to the state’s water infrastructure. He pointed out that bore wells had become ineffective and advocated for better pipeline designs and modernized filter beds, many of which remain outdated. The Deputy CM also urged officers to focus on field-level insights and implement technology-driven solutions to overcome current challenges.
He warned against inefficiencies such as the unnecessary installation of motors and improper maintenance practices, urging for a humanitarian and results-oriented strategy to achieve the mission's goals.
Focus on Implementation Challenges
The workshop served as a platform to discuss hurdles faced in the implementation of the Jaljeevan Mission across Andhra Pradesh's districts. Kalyan emphasized the importance of collective efforts and a robust support system to ensure the project’s success.
Reflecting on the broader significance of water access, Kalyan invoked the cultural observance of Bheeshma Ekadashi, questioning the dire consequences of water scarcity on daily life.
“This initiative is not just about providing water; it’s about restoring dignity and ensuring a basic right for every household,” Kalyan concluded.
The workshop marks a significant step forward in addressing water access challenges and highlights the government’s commitment to creating sustainable and inclusive solutions for the people of Andhra Pradesh.
