Qatar PM Slams Iran Strikes as ‘Dangerous Miscalculation’
Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the Prime Minister of Qatar, has strongly criticised Iran following missile and drone strikes targeting several Gulf nations. He described the attacks as a “dangerous miscalculation” and warned that the escalation could destabilise the wider Middle East region and trigger serious global economic consequences.
In an interview with Sky News, Al Thani expressed deep disappointment, calling the attacks a “big sense of betrayal.” He noted that Qatar had made it clear from the beginning that it would not participate in military action against its neighbours. However, the country still came under attack shortly after the conflict began.
The Qatari leader stated that his nation had always attempted to maintain constructive relations with Iran and was surprised by the sudden escalation. According to him, the justifications presented by Tehran for the strikes were unacceptable.
Al Thani also rejected claims that Iran’s attacks were directed only at military targets. He said a significant portion of the strikes had targeted civilian infrastructure, raising serious concerns about the safety of ordinary citizens. Despite the attacks, he praised the professionalism of Qatar’s defence and security forces for responding effectively to the threats.
Explosions were reported in the capital city, Doha, as Iranian missiles and drones struck several locations across the Gulf region. Qatar’s defence ministry confirmed that its air defence systems successfully intercepted at least one missile.
Meanwhile, tensions escalated further after Iranian state media announced that Mojtaba Khamenei had been appointed as the new Supreme Leader of Iran following the death of Ali Khamenei in earlier strikes.
The widening conflict has already affected global markets, with oil prices rising sharply amid fears of prolonged instability across West Asia.
