RTC Driver’s Death Sparks Bandh and Protests in Narsampet
The death of an RTC driver following a self-immolation attempt has triggered widespread protests and a bandh in Narsampet, Telangana. The incident has intensified ongoing agitation by Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (RTC) employees, who are demanding government intervention and resolution of their grievances.
The deceased driver, Kola Shanker Goud, had set himself on fire at the Narsampet RTC bus stand amid frustration over unresolved worker issues. He later succumbed to his injuries while being shifted for advanced treatment. His death led to an outpouring of anger among fellow workers.
As his body was brought to his native village Muthojipet, tensions escalated with a large number of RTC employees gathering to pay their respects. Protesters demanded that his body be taken to the Narsampet depot for tributes, but police denied permission, citing security concerns. Heavy police deployment was seen in both Muthojipet and Narsampet to prevent any escalation.
Political leaders, including former MLA Peddi Sudarshan Reddy, urged the government to provide ₹1 crore compensation and a job for a family member. He also appealed to workers to remain calm while assuring support.
Protests spread across the erstwhile Warangal district, with RTC workers staging demonstrations at multiple depots. Employees wore black ribbons, observed silence, and pledged solidarity with the deceased’s family.
The workers have urged the state government to initiate immediate talks with the RTC Joint Action Committee (JAC) to resolve their demands and prevent further tragedies. Authorities have also deployed emergency services, including fire personnel and ambulances, at depots as a precautionary measure amid rising tensions.
