Record Voter Turnout in Andhra Pradesh Elections
Andhra Pradesh witnessed a significant electoral event on Monday, with polling concluding successfully. The Election Commission's extensive preparations paid off, resulting in the highest voter turnout in the state's last four elections. Despite a slow start, voter participation surged throughout the day, surpassing initial estimates.
The final polling percentage reached an impressive 81.86%, exceeding the earlier prediction of 81%. This turnout marks the highest voting rate in the country for the four phases held so far. A total of 3,38,38,349 votes were cast, with 80.66% through EVMs and the remaining via postal ballots. Specifically, 4,42,216 votes were recorded through postal ballots, and home voting accounted for 53,573 votes.
Notably, female voters outnumbered male voters, reflecting strong engagement from women. The heightened anticipation around this election cycle was evident, as three opposition parties allied to challenge the ruling YCP, creating a highly competitive atmosphere. Many voters even traveled from other states to participate.
While the initial hours saw lower voter turnout, numbers steadily increased, leading to extended polling hours in certain areas. Despite the positive turnout, the election was marred by some post-poll violence. Section 144 was imposed in the Palnadu region, known for its sensitivity, to maintain order.
Overall, the high voter turnout signals a robust democratic engagement from the people of Andhra Pradesh.
