Revanth Reddy Leads Congress to Victory in Telangana
Despite facing criticism within the party, Revanth Reddy, the 54-year-old Telangana Congress chief, has successfully spearheaded the party's winning campaign in the southern state. Reddy momentarily held the lead against Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao in the BRS stronghold of Kamareddy, eventually securing victory in Kodangal.
A former MLA from the Telugu Desam Party, Reddy is a two-time MLA and currently represents Malkajgiri in the Lok Sabha. He joined the Congress in 2017.
After assuming the role of Telangana Congress chief in July 2021, Reddy became increasingly visible on the ground, leading street protests against the ruling BRS government on various issues.
Reddy's prominence and leadership were actively backed by the Congress high command, despite opposition from rivals within the party. He was projected as a major leader, addressing massive rallies and appearing alongside national party figures.
The high command's strategic choice of Reddy as the main contender against KCR aimed to boost his image in the run-up to the state elections. Reddy's victory in Kamareddy, a BRS stronghold, and his lead in Kodangal mark significant achievements.
Reddy had earlier predicted a landslide victory for the Congress in Telangana, emphasizing the party's resurgence. When questioned about the possibility of becoming Chief Minister, he deferred to the party's decision-making processes and high command authority.
