SSMB29: Rajamouli Picks Tanzania Over South Africa for Mahesh Babu Film

SS Rajamouli’s much-anticipated film SSMB29, starring Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra, is back in the spotlight as fresh reports confirm a major location shift. After earlier plans to shoot in Kenya were scrapped due to political unrest, South Africa was being considered as the next best alternative. However, recent developments reveal that even South Africa has been dropped from the list of international shooting locations.
According to sources, while the visuals in South Africa were stunning, they didn’t align with the film’s core aesthetic. Rajamouli is reportedly seeking landscapes with an "untamed and ancient" appeal, and Tanzania fits the vision perfectly. Originally, the production team had shortlisted both South Africa and Tanzania, but with the former no longer viable, Tanzania is now the confirmed location for the international schedule.
SSMB29 is being touted as one of India’s most ambitious cinematic projects, with a staggering budget of $116 million. The film went on floors earlier this year in Hyderabad, followed by a shooting schedule in Odisha. With the next phase now confirmed in Tanzania, expectations are building.
Apart from Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra, the film also stars Prithviraj Sukumaran and R Madhavan in key roles. With SS Rajamouli at the helm—renowned for epic blockbusters like Baahubali and RRR—fans are expecting nothing short of a global spectacle. Despite the location hurdles, the production is pushing forward steadily. Fans eagerly await an official announcement and a glimpse into what promises to be a visually groundbreaking cinematic experience.
