Sharmila Apologizes for Insulting Transgender People.
Sharmila explained that she and her group treat the transgender community respectfully and that the word "Hijra" was used in passing during a brief conversation.
Transgender people protested against YSR Telangana Party head YS Sharmila on Tuesday, and she apologized to them on Wednesday.
Sharmila clarified that she and her party hold the transgender community in the highest regard and that she had only used the term in passing and never meant any disrespect. YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's sister, Sharmila, has apologised to anyone she may have offended.
She promised that if YSRTP is elected, it will help them achieve economic security, improve their social standing, and provide access to credit.
On Tuesday, trans people in Hyderabad protested, demanding an explanation from Sharmila for her offensive comments. Protesters threatened to disrupt her padayatra in the state if she did not apologise.
On February 18th, during her padayatra in Mahabubabad, Sharmila criticised the local Legislator of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Shankar Naik, calling him a "Hijra" (eunuch). The ruling party lodged strong protests in response to the offensive word. Sharmila was arrested, placed in custody, and deported to Hyderabad by the authorities.
Afterwards, the YSRTP chief argued that her comments merely reacted to the MLA's statement. She claimed that Shankar Naik had referred to her as a "Hijra," to which she had responded, "Who is Hijra?" Surely you must be the Hijra'.
