Supreme Court Questions Timing of Arvind Kejriwal's Arrest by ED
The Supreme Court has asked the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to explain the timing of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's arrest just before the general elections. Kejriwal is challenging his arrest in the Delhi liquor policy case. Justice Sanjiv Khanna emphasized the importance of liberty and raised concerns about the timing of the arrest. The court also asked the ED to clarify the time gap between initiating proceedings and filing repeated complaints.
Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Kejriwal, argued that there was no evidence of proceeds of crime or direct involvement of the Aam Aadmi Party chief.
The ED has until May 3 to respond to the court's queries. Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 in connection with a money laundering case related to the Delhi liquor policy and has been in Tihar Jail since April 1. The Delhi High Court previously found nothing illegal about his arrest on April 9.
