TGSRTC Strike Escalates After Driver’s Death and Suicide Attempts
The ongoing Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) strike has taken a tragic turn, with one driver dying after a self-immolation attempt and two others attempting suicide. The incidents have intensified the crisis, prompting the state government to initiate talks with employee unions.
The deceased driver, Shankar Goud from the Narsampet depot, suffered severe burns after setting himself ablaze and later died while being shifted for treatment. In separate incidents, another employee reportedly consumed pesticide, while a third was stopped from attempting self-immolation by colleagues.
These developments have heightened tensions among RTC workers, who have been on an indefinite strike demanding resolution of long-pending issues. In response, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy directed ministers to hold discussions with union leaders, urging employees not to resort to extreme measures.
The strike has severely disrupted public transport across Telangana, especially in Hyderabad and rural areas. With over 9,000 buses off the roads, millions of daily commuters have been affected. Passengers have faced long delays, overcrowding, and increased fares charged by private transport operators.
Union leaders have criticised the government’s approach, accusing it of being insensitive and failing to address key demands. Meanwhile, RTC management has appealed to workers to end the strike, stating that steps have already been taken, including forming a committee to examine their concerns.
The situation remains tense, with no immediate resolution in sight. Workers have intensified protests, including organising large-scale demonstrations at depots. As negotiations begin, restoring normal bus services and preventing further loss of life remain critical priorities for the government.
