Tamil Nadu Government Orders Closure of 717 TASMAC Liquor Shops
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has announced the closure of 717 TASMAC liquor shops across the state in a major policy decision aimed at reducing the presence of alcohol outlets near sensitive public locations. The move is being seen as one of the strongest actions taken in recent years to address growing social concerns related to liquor accessibility.
According to reports, the closures mainly target TASMAC outlets located within 500 meters of schools, colleges, temples, churches, mosques, bus stands, and other crowded public areas. The government believes liquor shops operating near educational institutions and places of worship create serious social, safety, and public health issues, particularly affecting students, women, and daily commuters.
The decision has received support from many sections of society, including parents, social activists, and public health experts. Critics of the existing system have long argued that easy access to liquor near schools and residential areas negatively impacts youngsters and disturbs the surrounding environment. Many people are now calling on other states, including Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, to consider implementing similar restrictions.
Concerns have also been raised about liquor shops located along highways and busy roads. Experts warn that roadside alcohol outlets contribute to drunk driving incidents, road accidents, and public disturbances. Although highway liquor restrictions have been discussed previously, many citizens believe stricter enforcement is still necessary.
Observers further note that liquor outlets near bus stands and crowded public spaces can increase harassment, late-night disturbances, family disputes, and unsafe conditions for women and children. Because of these concerns, Vijay’s decision is being viewed not only as an administrative action but also as a strong social message focused on public welfare and community safety.
