Three years after the prohibition, TikTok closes its India branch and terminates all employees: Report
Most of the employees who were put off from TikTok were in charge of the business' activities in Dubai and Brazil.
The Chinese video-sharing service, TikTok, has fired all 40 of its Indian staff, nearly three years after India banned the app. The Economic Times said that the staff, which was terminated during a call this week, will get a 9-month severance payment.
The employees of the Bytedance-owned company's headquarters in India were primarily in charge of the activities in Dubai and Brazil. The 28th of February will be the final day for the Indian staff, according to the article, which cited a source. Additionally, employees were given signals that due to the Indian government's strict stance on Chinese apps, operations in India would not be renewed.
With more than 200 million users and the second-highest market share in India, TikTok suffered a severe setback in 2020 when it was banned among 300 other Chinese applications on the grounds of national security. The 15-second video app has the highest downloads on Android in India in 2019.
In the US, where it has been the most downloaded app since 2021, TikTok could experience a similar fate.
