Trump Makes U-Turn on Ukraine After Meeting Zelenskyy

US President Donald Trump has dramatically reversed his position on Ukraine’s war with Russia, declaring that Ukraine could potentially reclaim all occupied territories with European and NATO support. The statement came just hours after Trump had criticized the UN over the conflict.
Meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Trump expressed admiration for Ukraine’s resistance. He later posted on social media: “I think Ukraine, with Europe and NATO’s support, can fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form.”
The shift contrasts with Trump’s earlier stance urging Kyiv to make concessions. Zelenskyy welcomed the support, saying they would discuss security guarantees and strategies to end the war. Trump also told the UN that Russia’s prolonged war made Moscow “look bad,” as it was meant to be a short skirmish.
Despite Trump’s words, little progress has been made in actual peace efforts. Putin has shown no interest in talks with Zelenskyy, while Russian bombardments continue. Trump pressed Europe to cut Russian oil imports and floated the idea of powerful tariffs to weaken Moscow’s war effort.
Meanwhile, NATO members expressed alarm after Estonia accused Russia of airspace violations. Trump said NATO allies had the right to shoot down intruding Russian planes, though direct US involvement would depend on circumstances. The remarks underscore the ongoing volatility of the war as it drags into its fourth year.
