Trump’s Proposal to Buy Spirit Airlines Sparks Debate
US President Donald Trump has stirred controversy after suggesting that he might consider purchasing the financially struggling Spirit Airlines, raising questions about the role of government in private business and potential ethical conflicts.
Speaking about the airline’s situation, Trump noted that Spirit possesses valuable assets despite its financial troubles. He hinted at the possibility of either a government bailout or a direct acquisition, though he did not clarify the exact structure of such intervention. Reports indicate that the White House is already in discussions regarding a potential $500 million rescue package for the low-cost carrier.
Spirit Airlines has been facing severe financial difficulties, worsened by the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the aviation industry has largely recovered, budget airlines like Spirit have struggled to regain profitability as passenger preferences shift toward more comfortable travel options. The airline has filed for bankruptcy twice, most recently in August 2025, and continues to face pressure from rising fuel costs.
The administration has also criticised the previous government for blocking Spirit’s proposed merger with JetBlue in 2024, arguing that the deal could have strengthened the airline’s financial position.
Spirit’s CEO Dave Davis welcomed Trump’s remarks, expressing hope for a solution that protects jobs and maintains affordable fares. However, the proposal has drawn criticism from within the administration as well. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy cautioned against further financial intervention, warning that it may not resolve the underlying issues.
The situation raises broader questions about whether a sitting US president should be directly involved in managing or owning a private enterprise, highlighting concerns about governance, ethics, and economic policy.
