Trump's Zero Tolerance Policy Was Sued By The US Govt
Parents and children are seeking damages for "significant and lasting trauma"
In 2018, Trump's Zero Tolerance policy tore apart thousands of families. Migrants attempting to cross the US border anywhere other than an official port of entry were to be detained and criminally prosecuted under the policy.
Hogan Lovells, a global law firm, and Arizona co-counsel Lewis Roca have filed a lawsuit against the US government on behalf of Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES).
In a lawsuit filed in federal district court in Arizona on behalf of parents, it seeks damages for the harms they and their children suffered as a result of the prior administration's Zero Tolerance policy.
The 4 plaintiff families in the lawsuit are still suffering from being separated and detained. They have received no explanation, acknowledgement, or apology from the US govt, it said.
“Zero Tolerance was an intentional act of abuse, and it is the current administration’s responsibility to rectify the ongoing harms caused to these families.”
Under the Federal Tort Claims Act, the plaintiffs seek damages for the "significant and lasting trauma" caused to parents and children by the government's policy.
