UP ATS Arrests Man for Allegedly Spying for Pakistan and Funding ISI Agents

The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has arrested a man named Shehzad from Rampur district on charges of spying for Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and smuggling goods across the India-Pakistan border. He was taken into custody in Moradabad on Sunday following a detailed surveillance operation based on intelligence inputs.
According to ATS officials, Shehzad had been operating along the border for several years, secretly transporting items such as cosmetics, clothes, and spices. These trips allegedly served as a cover for espionage activities. Police claim he maintained direct contact with ISI operatives, providing them with sensitive information about India’s internal security.
A case has been filed against Shehzad under laws related to acts that threaten the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India. During the investigation, police discovered that Shehzad also facilitated financial support to ISI agents operating within India, allegedly on instructions from Pakistani handlers.
Authorities further allege that Shehzad recruited individuals from Rampur and nearby areas under the guise of smuggling operations. These recruits were reportedly sent to Pakistan, where they were co-opted by the ISI. The agency is also accused of arranging their travel documents and visas.
In a more alarming development, Shehzad is said to have provided Indian SIM cards to ISI operatives, helping them establish covert communication channels for espionage within the country.
This arrest comes shortly after Haryana Police detained travel blogger Jyoti Rani for allegedly spying for Pakistani intelligence during India’s recent Operation Sindoor. The two arrests signal heightened activity by Pakistani agencies and a renewed focus by Indian authorities on counterintelligence operations.
The UP ATS has said the investigation is ongoing and further arrests or disclosures may follow.
