US Professor Removed For Urging International Students to Speak English
A US university professor Megan Neely has been removed as director of a graduate programme after sending an email urging Chinese students to speak in English.
The email reads “PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep these unintended consequences in mind when you choose to speak in Chinese in the building. I encourage you to commit to using English 100% of the time when you are in Hock (the faculty building) or any other professional setting”.
Her email went viral on Twitter and Chinese social media in the form of screenshots and the Duke University confirmed to US media that the screenshots were genuine.
Neely explained two faculty members complained about the students speaking Chinese in public areas in the department.
Though many have criticized Neely's email as racist or insensitive, some ethnic students said she is a supportive programme director and definitely not a racist, not even close.
