Why it's important that lithium deposits have been found in Jammu and Kashmir

Lithium deposits have been found for the first time, and that too in Jammu & Kashmir. Vivek Bharadwaj, secretary of mines, stated.

In response to a question from Mint, Bhardwaj stated, "We have re-oriented our exploration tactics towards vital and strategic minerals and this finding is a validation of our efforts."

One of the fundamental components of EV batteries is the non-ferrous metal lithium. The majority of India's minerals, including lithium, nickel, and cobalt, are now imported.

According to past claims from the mines ministry, the government is taking various aggressive measures to import minerals, notably lithium, from Australia and Argentina. This is done to enhance the crucial supply chain for minerals that supports emerging technologies.

According to Bharadwaj, who was speaking at the 62nd Central Geological Programming board meeting in this place, critical minerals are required everywhere, whether it be for a solar panel or a cell phone. He said that in order for the country to become self-sufficient, it is essential to discover important minerals and then process them.

The lithium triangle has most of the world's lithium reserves, with 50% of the resources concentrated in these three South American nations—Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile. While China controls 75% of the world's lithium refining, it enjoys an edge over other countries.
