X will begin charging $1 annually for new users, according to Elon Musk
Elon Musk announced on Wednesday that new X users will be required to pay $1 per year to publish content on the platform in an effort to combat algorithms; however, they can view other users' posts without charge.
The organization is conducting a pilot program evaluation in New Zealand and the Philippines prior to its global launch.
In the Philippines and New Zealand, new users of X will be required to pay $1 to create accounts.
"Read is free, but writing costs $1 per year." Musk wrote, "This is the only way to combat bots without blocking legitimate users."
"Bots will still be able to manipulate the platform, but it will be a thousand times more difficult to do so," he continued.
As stated by X, this was implemented to combat malware and will be tested in these nations.
"The new measure, which is part of a program called 'Not A Bot,' is intended to supplement our already substantial efforts to reduce spam, platform manipulation, and bot activity," X explained.
In the absence of subscribing, new users will be restricted to'read only' capabilities, including the ability to view posts and videos.
This new program is supplementary to X's verified $8 per month primary subscription.
X (previously known as Twitter) is allegedly contemplating the division of its premium paid subscription service into three membership tiers as a means to increase revenue and achieve profitability by the year 2024.
As per rumors, X intended to divide the $8 Premium subscription into three distinct plans, namely Plus, Standard, and Basic, each priced differently.
Users of the entry-level Basic plan will continue to encounter advertisements on the platform.
The Standard tier will display half as many advertisements, while the highest-priced Plus tier, which may exceed $8 per month, will eliminate all advertisements.
