Pakistan terminated - No longer a major Non-Nato ally : Bill introduced

United States in 2002 had named Pakistan a major non-NATO ally which allowed for the release of over $25 billion of aid to Pakistan. However, the 'Resolution 73' introduced in the House of Representatives by an influential lawmaker Any Briggs seeks termination of Pakistan as the major Non-Nato ally and also sets conditions if it is to be redesignated. The resolution has been sent to the House Foreign Affairs Committee for necessary action.

This is an important step to hold Pakistan accountable for its years of duplicity supporting the extremist Taliban, prolonging the Afghan war & the unnecessary deaths & suffering.

As per the official it is also stated that for future re-designation as the non-nato ally, the President of United States of America (USA) needs to certify to the Congress that -

1. Pakistan’s military is contributing significantly to disrupt the safe haven and freedom of movement of the Haqqani Network in that country

2. Pakistan has taken steps to demonstrate its commitment to prevent the Haqqani Network from using any Pakistani territory as a safe haven.

3. the Government of Pakistan is actively coordinating with the Government of Afghanistan to restrict the movement of militants, such as the Haqqani Network, along with the Afghanistan-Pakistan border

4. Pakistan has shown progress in arresting and prosecuting Haqqani Network senior leaders and mid-level operatives.
