Rakesh Astana's tenure in CBI curtailed
After Alok Verma, the central government has curtailed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Special Director Rakesh Asthana even before the expiry of the term. Along with Astana services of four officers also is curtailed with immediate effect. According to sources, Rakesh Asthana will now be given charge of Air Safety Department.
The issue of high-ranking officials of Alok Verma and Rakesh Asthana has been discussed in the country for quite a while now. Considering the growing disputes government had sent these two on forced leave. However, Alok Verma challenged this decision in the Supreme Court. Later, the court ordered Alok Verma's re-appointment. However, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the high-level committee had removed Alok Verma as the CBI director. However, Verma had resigned from the government service after refusing to accept the charge of new post provided.
So, the attention of everyone was to see what happens with Rakesh Asthana. The new CBI Director will be selected on the24th of this month. Even before that the transfer of four officers of the CBI came earlier today. Special Director Rakesh Asthana, Joint Director Arun Kumar Sharma, Deputy Inspector General Manish Kumar Sinha and Police Superintendent Jayant J. Naiknaware are the ones whose term is reduced.
