The largest theater chain in the U.S. gives in to pressure
We told you earlier this year that AMC, America's biggest theater chain, has started a new price plan for fans called "Sightline," which is based on where you sit in the theater. People can choose to pay more or less based on where they sit, just like on Broadway or at a show.
The seats in the front row will be cheaper, the seats in the middle will be more expensive, and the Preferred Sightline tickets will be the most expensive. People were very critical of the move, saying that it hurts people with lower incomes and helps people with higher incomes. India has used this method, called the "slab system," for many years.
The latest news says that AMC Theatres has decided not to move forward with its seat location-based price plan, Sightline at AMC, because it has gotten a lot of bad feedback and no one has returned tickets. The plan, which was only tried in a few places, will be scrapped in order to keep ticket prices reasonable.
Even though the price of seats in the front row went down a little, people still chose to sit in the more expensive chairs. Also, AMC's rivals didn't use the same price strategy, which made the test program less competitive.
Instead, AMC wants to give customers a new way to watch movies by putting in larger, more comfortable seats in the front row by the end of 2023.
