Trump discuses potential missile defence cooperation to improve bilateral strategic partnership.
America has described India as its key partner in the Indian Ocean region. On Thursday, President Donald Trump released a report on US and India's defence cooperation. It has been said that discussions about cooperation between the two countries in the missile defence sector are in progress. This report came from the U.S side at a time when India and Russia have already come close to each other with the S-400 missile defence system.
The Pentagon report says that many countries are developing their own missile technology in South Asia. They range from ballistic to cruise missile technology. In such a situation, the U.S has also discussed cooperation with India in the missile sector. This has been possible due to the acceptance of India as an important partner in the Indian Pacific region.
In the report, missile development projects of China and Russia have been described as a major threat to the U.S. However, it was not told how the U.S and India would increase cooperation in the missile sector.
Earlier, the U.S has long been reluctant to give its missile technology to India. Just a few years ago, after discussions with neighbouring countries, India had talked about its deal with America's missile defence system especially about the technique 'Thad' that eliminates the missile at the height.
The Obama administration did not show particular interest in sharing its technology with India. After this, India had contacted Russia to buy this technology. Last year between Putin and Modi a contract was signed for the S-400 missile defence system.
Since then, the Trump Administration has started giving importance to India. The Pentagon report also mentions 2017 National Security Strategy (NSS) suggestions. It states that the United States will extend cooperation with India to safeguard the Indian Ocean and its surrounding areas. America will support India's leadership in every way in this area.
