US Congress wants ‘woefully outdated’ immigration system updated.
The White House said Monday that the Biden administration has asked Congress to fix the very old immigration system.
"As we've said many times before, this immigration system is very old. We've asked Congress to improve our immigration system, which is horribly out of date. "We've been very clear about that, and that includes the temporary visa programmes that haven't been updated in more than 20 years," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters at her daily news conference.
Under the rules in place now, workers with certain temporary visas usually have 60 days to find a new job, apply for a different type of visa, or get ready to leave the United States. The White House Press Secretary said that on President Joe Biden's first day in office, he put forward a bill to change the way immigration works because he took this very seriously.
Jean-Pierre said in answer to a question that "this is such a broken system" that he wanted that to be the first piece of legislation he proposed on Day One.
