India-Maldives Strengthen Ties with Major Agreements During PM Modi's Visit

During his state visit to Maldives, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu signed several key agreements, marking a major step in their 60-year diplomatic relationship. The visit included the launch of infrastructure projects, a Line of Credit, and deeper cooperation across multiple sectors.
Among the signed agreements were a ₹4,850 crore Line of Credit for Maldivian development, debt repayment easing, and finalizing the framework for a Free Trade Agreement. Other MoUs covered fisheries, digital solutions, meteorology, pharmacopoeia recognition, and Unified Payments Interface (UPI) adoption in Maldives.
PM Modi and President Muizzu inaugurated several community projects, including 3,300 social housing units in Hulhumale, new roads and drainage systems in Addu city, the Ministry of Defence building, and more. Commemorative stamps were released to celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
Modi emphasized that India has always stood by the Maldives as a reliable partner—during disasters, pandemics, and for economic recovery. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to being the “first responder” in times of need.
PM Modi announced further investments and development projects, including a new $565 million Line of Credit, initiatives in renewable energy, maritime security, and weather science cooperation. Trade will now be facilitated through local currency settlement, boosting tourism and retail sectors.
The visit also signaled progress toward a Bilateral Investment Treaty and enhanced maritime cooperation through the Colombo Security Conclave.
Modi concluded by stating that India and Maldives share more than borders—they share a vision for peace, development, and prosperity in the Indian Ocean. He promised continued support for Maldives’ growth, describing the relationship as “older than history, and as deep as the ocean.”
